Remains of the pandemic.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, a new cemetery was established near Najaf, Iraq, to bury the increasing number of people who died from the virus. The cemetery, called “Wadi al-Salam al-Shuhada,” is located about 15 kilometers from Wadi-us-Salaam, the traditional cemetery of Najaf.
The cemetery was established due to the high number of COVID-19 deaths in Iraq, which overwhelmed the capacity of existing cemeteries.
As of September 2021, Iraq has reported over 1.8 million confirmed cases of COVID-19 and over 20,000 deaths. The images document the bereaved graves of Covid victims in the middle of a desert.
